So I am sad to say my search in Mercedes came to nothing in the end. I didn't find out more about the family but as it was Easter and most of the churches were crazy busy I feel that there are still a couple more avenues I have to explore so I will love going back to dig around a bit more. So I have the details of the births and baptismal from the church, However there is no such church there. But this is because the protestant church is new. So I am hoping to find out if there was a church there before that might have baptised my great grandfather and my great aunt. I think the church is the best way to go at the moment.
So apart from this the trip was lovely. There was a tornado one day which was crazy but the rest of the time was super relaxing and lovely to get away. I was also there with a friend and we watched the Easter celebrations. There was an amazing re-enactment of the crucifixion with all the stages of this. It was amazing and 'Jesus' committed to his role. It was freezing and he was in just a sheet and being whipped. It wasn't a fake whip either, he was actually hurt! The whole town came out for this and it was cool to feel part of something local.
Myself and my friend also went for walks around the town. Mercedes is known for its cheese and salami so we found some lovely old bars and pubs and also some small farms which have beer and salami and music. Its very rustic and great fun. We also went to a place called Lujan which is known for its Cathedral. Lots of people come from BA on a pilgrimage to Lujan which is about 100km to walk and so it was really interesting going there on Easter Sunday.
So in all it was a great weekend away to see a place outside of the the guide books and to try and find out more about my family.
